The first missionaries realised that the Mayan tradition was very deeply rooted, and that it was necessary to have a certain tolerance towards Mayan ancestral beliefs. This generated an interesting blend of Christianity with indigenous spirituality. To these days, Mayan people often celebrate their ceremonies before entering the Catholic churches, similarly to what their ancestors had done in the mountains and hills.
